Greetings to all of you busy and passionate women committed to success in your life! It’s Dr. Reid, your consultant on natural health and wellness.
Define Well-Being! The first thing I want to ask you all to do is to pause for a minute and define, for yourself: What is well-being for you? Even better, write it down because then you have to be more specific. Second, think about what are the things, in your view, that would be needed to get there, and third, ask yourself where do you see yourself today, in relation to where you want to be.
As you strive for success in your professional environment, and for success at home if you
also have a family, remember that investing in a wellness program will give you the best returns ever, all else falls in place smoother and better if you are feeling good.
Here, in this space, our purpose will be to learn about well-being. Another definition of learning: to close the gap between my current reality and the vision I have of the reality I want to produce. The expansion of one’s consciousness through increased awareness and choice is what closes the gap. (This is different from the normal definition of learning which is to gather more information). Here, information alone is not enough: one has to be able to translate that information into action and to produce a result.
From this perspective, every failure is an opportunity for learning. So even failure can be a success. If you cannot produce the result, then you don’t know it. If you don’t know it, it is an opening to learn it.
What does it mean to live aware of what we are feeling, of what is happening to us? I means a lot!
A simple definition of consciousness: The capacity to be aware and to choose. And here goes one for the opposite, unconsciousness: the desire to live thinking that reality is what is not.
The position of being that drives us away from wellness is that of the victim, and the position that takes us towards wellness is that of the player. So let’s all be players! The victim will always blame the circumstances. If she is late to a meeting, she will blame the traffic. “If there hadn’t been traffic, I would have been on time” Who is at fault? The hundreds of people who had decided to be on the road at that time are. We are absolutely innocent! A player realizes that unless she makes herself part of the problem, she cannot make herself part of the solution.
The one part of the equation that we can influence are our own actions, so by excluding myself from the problem, I am giving my power away. As long as I blame the other, I am stuck. If I am part of the problem, I will always have a leverage that I can change.
Sometimes patients of mine say things like: “I did not calculate that I was menstruating when I planned going for this hike; I got too tired and then a got a headache. I felt vey bad for 2 days after that.” She is, by this, already hinting at the solution of the problem: next time, to do less during the menses. A learner is most suited to take the position of the player. The player realizes that whatever happens is always the combination between the external environment and the challenges it imposes on her, and her decisions to respond to these challenges. She has a choice of how to respond to them.
So, today’s entry turned out quite “philosophical”, but these are ground principles that set the tone for how we do everything during our day, and these are the things that are not usually covered in a routine medical check-up, but have tremendous influence in health outcomes.
