How to Find the Right Attorney for You

Hiring the right attorney or law firm to represent you and your business is among the single most important decisions you can make to protect your rights and assets.

While some attorneys specialize in one or two areas of expertise, others offer an array of services. Someone who specializes solely in writing contracts and lease agreements may not be the same individual you want to represent you in employment litigation or product liability, for example.

How do you find sound legal representation for your specific needs.

Start with friends and colleagues- Ask for referrals.

Search the net- Research the type of lawyer you need by searching http://www.lawyers.com and the California State Bar Association www.calbar.ca.gov. Research your county bar association’s web site, too.

Meet with candidates face to face- Any good attorney will typically offer an initial interview of roughly a half hour at no charge to answer your initial questions. That should be enough time to present your needs, ask about his or her experience and obtain one or two client referrals. If your need is for an attorney to represent you in a catastrophic injury case, for example, ask for referrals in that specific area.

Check into a history of disciplinary action- Against your candidate by visiting www.calbar.ca.gov.

What professional traits should you look for in an attorney? Many of the same traits that help build any successful relationship.

Does the attorney seem trustworthy? Sometimes this might be a “go with your gut” feeling.

Is he or she likeable? Note how the attorney treats his or her staff. Does he or she take calls during your limited time together? Observe his or her body language. It should say “I am confident, relaxed yet professional, and interested in what you have to say.” Do you feel a rapport?

Is this Attorney a good listener? Are his or her questions relevant, insightful and on point?

Is the attorney accessible? Do you have his or her cell phone number and email address? A good attorney should be available 24/7 to deal with an acute crisis. Does he or she return non-urgent calls within 24 hours?

Is this Attorney experienced in your area of need? It’s prudent to consider someone with several years of experience in addition to experience in trial and arbitration.

Is this Attorney well connected? Attorneys can be ideal catalysts connecting you to other professionals, such as CPAs, other attorneys with different areas of specialty, bankers, insurance agents, etc. We’re in the advice business. Often that advice is to recommend other professionals who can support and enhance the client’s personal and professional endeavors.

Above all, don’t be penny wise and pound foolish by attempting to represent yourself, whether you’ve been in a car accident or need legal help with a contract or liability issue. I’ve represented too many clients who nearly “settled” and would have lost a significant amount of revenue because they thought they couldn’t afford a lawyer. An initial consultation costs nothing but time. When it comes to protecting your rights and assets, it’s time well spent.
