Dear Amy,
I have a question about defining my niche. I’m a graphic designer and I want my primary focus to be designing PowerPoint presentations for female public speakers. I’m not sure if this is too narrow of a market. Can you advise?

Hi Malena,
Defining your niche makes it very easy for others to find you. So I LOVE that you’re doing that! Your audience could see you as the go-to-girl for PowerPoint presentations. That being said, you’ll want to determine if you feel there is a big enough market for you. Meaning, are there enough women out there who want help with PowerPoint presentations who could potentially hire you.
So, you must do the research. Don’t guess. The first question you might ask yourself is, “what types of females want PowerPoint presentations?” Authors, professional speakers, entrepreneurs? While you are researching, you need to be considering what problem there is for you to solve. Meaning… why do these women need someone to design their PowerPoint presentations? For example, do poorly designed PowerPoint presentations de-value one’s product or service? Why would someone need what you are offering? A real need… one that can be measured by research. Find out from your target market if they’d hire someone to design PowerPoint presentations.
Now, you might select a couple of other niches that fall into the same area. Maybe you create PowerPoint presentations as well as any signage or other graphic art they might need at their speaking engagements.
So, make sure there is a market for what you’re offering and then, next step… sales and marketing and promotion!

Amy
