Dear Amy…
Hi Amy, I hope life is amazing for you. It has become abundantly clear to me that in order to generate the type of income that I want and the freedom that I desire, that I need to give in a major way.
I want to start a charitable organization of some type. Not sure what kind yet, but that was the part I wanted to ask you about. Which is a better to do for my goal? Something that I enjoy doing but am doing already? (Like fitness for impoverished obese people or cooking “meals on wheels” for aids patients). Or something that helps more “deeper struggling” people like a homeless shelter or women’s shelter. The latter would take longer to set up but I feel it would be more important than the first. (Keeping people alive vs. keeping them healthy).
Any ideas or feedback?
Thanks,
Leon Lavigne

Dear Leon…
Hi Leon.
Ok…let’s dig right into this.
What you’re doing is important…beyond money:
First…I love that you’re considering ways to “give-back.” And, yes, it will elevate your platform and can help your business. Equally important…you will be
helping a lot of people who need what you have to offer. This really is a win-win.
Determining what to give, how to give and who to give to:
It is critical that you consider your personal and professional goals before making this choice. So what is your vision? What are your goals? And, what is the plan to achieve your goals? You must be clear on these. The clearer you are, the easier it will be to make these types of important choices. If you’re not clear, then you’ll need to get clear! Then, it’s easy. All you have to do is make sure the choice that you’re making is in alignment with your vision and goals.
Prioritizing:
The next thing you’ll want to ask yourself is, “Does launching a non-profit fit into your timeline RIGHT NOW?”
Too many of us get distracted by projects that don’t actually serve our goals. For example, if a person is struggling financially, taking on a “free writing project” isn’t where their efforts should be spent. So, you’ve got to really look at what your priorities are right now, how much time you have and where this fits in. Consider the difference between occasional giving and launching a charitable organization…big difference.
If launching a new business doesn’t make sense for you right now (a charitable organization is a new business, make no mistake about it), then, just launch a group. Give the group a powerful name and purpose (to give in some way) and organize gatherings with your group for the purpose of giving. Invite your existing community to become members and, as the leader, you’ll be elevating your platform. And, a group is a great way for you begin creating the backbone for your future charitable organization without all the formalities and commitments.
If it makes perfect sense for your vision, goals and timeline, do it! Everything depends on your bigger picture goals. There are so many scenarios.
Do What’s In Your Heart:
That being said I can clarify some things that will help make this choice easier for you. There are all sorts of things you can do to “give.” In your two options you can’t go wrong. Do what’s in your heart. Do what you feel passionate about. If one of these options serves your greater message and vision, I would tend to lean towards that one.
As one of the most sought after personal trainers in Los Angeles, your commitment is to spread the message of health, fitness and nutrition. How can you continue to do that through a non-profit that you launch or serve? That is who you are Leon…so spread your message. Your business doesn’t just save the struggling. Your business prevents people from struggling. So, get into the heart of your message and it will lead you to the perfect way for you to give back.
To Your Success,
Amy
