My Big Epiphany

Hi! I’m Amy. I’m an entrepreneur, business coach, author, media personality, wife and mom of a precocious 5 year old. Phew! I totally understand the struggles that come with running your own business: trying to find time, prioritizing, deciding what to do…and when to do it, and ALL the fears and doubts. I actually had to get fired to face my fear of being an entrepreneur.
Here’s more on that “changed my life” story.

Total Failure

I was NOT an overnight success. The first business I launched was a toy vending company. The idea was to place these toy vending machines anywhere kids were—bowling alleys, family restaurants, amusement parks. It should have been easy. But it wasn’t. Soon after I started, I learned that the market was saturated. Toy vending machines were literally everywhere. But, finally, I got my first a location! I was so excited…. Read More

And just as I was unscrewing the cap off of my 5-dollar bottle of champagne, I received the call from the manager of my new location. My vending machine had fallen on a small child. Don’t worry! He was ok. Minus a couple of scrapes and boo boo’s. But I wasn’t. I was a mess. Yah…in my attempts to “do it all myself,” technically savvy ME, (NOT!) didn’t mount the base to the top of the machine properly. So, it came down on top of this little 3-year old boy. I could have really hurt him. And what if I had? I didn’t even have business insurance. So here I am…failing business, no money, lost confidence… what had I been thinking? I leveraged everything for that business.

Ok. Reality check… now what? I had two choices: 1) give up (no freakin’ way…even though I have to admit I thought about it for a minute or two), or 2) do something different. So…I swallowed my pride and asked for help, (which was really hard for a mid twenties know it all). But that is when the world of success opened up to me.

My Aha Moment

I was notorious for doing things “on my own.” And, it has bitten me in the A%& every single time. Well this time, I had to do things differently. It was time for me to stop being so stubborn and change if I wanted success. So, I went to my Dad, entrepreneur extraordinaire, and asked for help. He told me to put a team of mentors together and hire a coach…so I did. I put together a team of mentors that consisted of the smartest people I knew who were willing to meet with me monthly, for free, and advise me. Then I pulled out my credit card and hired a consultant to work with me weekly. …. Read More

What a ride! All of a sudden there were all these ideas floating around. I wasn’t stuck with my own viewpoints and limited resources. Everyone was helping me – it was AWESOME! Together, my team and I brainstormed ways to open up new markets. Long story short…I was the first person in the U.S. to place my vending machines in a small, no-named company called…TACO BELL! With the help of my mentors, I learned how to think outside of the box, be creative, set higher goals, be accountable, and move past fear so that I could take actions that would skyrocket my business. For the first time, I knew I had it in me! I felt smart. And not because “I” was. But because the combined talent and brains of my team were. It was awesome beyond words!

Five years (and lots of ups and downs) later, I sold my vending company for a BIG FAT profit and made a declaration that I would NEVER do business without a team again.

I realized that you can’t build a business alone. I mean you can be a solo-preneur, sure. But that doesn’t have to mean that you do business alone. In fact, the faster you accept that you need a team, the faster you’ll start seeing success.

Mom and Entrepreneur…Whoa!

Today, I run multiple businesses AND am a mom of an incredible 5 year-old girl. WHOA. I thought being an entrepreneur was hard. Being a mom is the hardest job ever! And running a business at the same time…well, I don’t have to tell you. It’s a freakin challenge. Holy Patoots! But, I’m here to tell you that it’s not only possible, it’s TOTALLY POSSIBLE! I’m doing it. But let me share this – you have to be 100% “IN” if you’re going to do both. Your business has to be a non-negotiable, just like your kids. The question isn’t whether you’re capable, it’s whether you’re committed to doing what it takes. Regardless of how much, or little, time you (think) you have. And if you’re not really committed, don’t do it. Because you don’t have the luxury of time to waste when you’re a mom. You have a family counting on you. But if you truly want success in business, you can do it – and I can help. …. Read More
